Oral Hygiene Check Up

Who should I see a hygienist, a dentist or a periodontist?

Hygienists, periodontists and dentists each play a different role in looking after your dental health, and so you will visit them for different reasons.

Your hygienist will perform your professional teeth clean and look after the health of your gums every six months. They focus on assessing your oral health and prevention of future dental problems.

Your dentist will perform your annual check-ups and look after your general dental health. If your dentist or hygienist finds evidence of gum disease they may choose to refer you to a periodontist.

A periodontist is a dental specialist whose focus is the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease (also known as gum disease), and in placing dental implants and performing bone grafts and gum lifts.(again copied from another website but something similar can be he content)

What does a hygienist do?

Our first goal is to implement a preventative approach to tooth decay and gum disease. We do this by seeing you every six months to provide a detailed exam, a professional clean, and X-rays (if appropriate).

You will also receive a screening for periodontitis and oral cancer, and each of your existing restorations will be evaluated for their integrity. Individuals who are recovering from gum disease may need to be seen more frequently.

Importance of Dental hygiene

Keeping Those Whites Pearly!

Daily brushing and flossing are important to your dental health, but would you know that a cavity was brewing if you didn’t have pain? Would you necessarily know for sure that you have signs of gum disease that need further treatment? Most people probably wouldn’t, so this is why routine dental examinations and cleanings are so important to your dental health!

If you can’t remember when your last dental cleaning was, and your teeth are looking less than their pearly white best, you need to call Smilemakers to schedule an appointment!

Nishtha – Hygienist

Your Teeth Need Regular “Deep” Cleaning

You’re careful to brush and floss daily and you always brush after eating anything sweet. What can a routine cleaning do that you can’t do given your thorough daily hygiene routine?

Well, for one thing, our dental hygienist begins your cleaning by carefully scraping hard mineral buildup (tartar) from your teeth using a small metal tool. You cannot accomplish this by brushing and flossing on your own. But this is only the first step.

Next, the hygienist uses a lightly abrasive polishing compound to deep clean your teeth and remove surface stains. Now your smile is really starting to brighten!

The hygienist then flosses your teeth to make sure all plaque buildup has been removed; this helps to prevent tooth decay. And finally, the hygienist might apply fluoride to help protect teeth from tooth decay, particularly if tooth decay and cavities are a regular problem for you. Routine cleanings are generally not painful and usually only take about 30 minutes.

X-Rays may be needed to check the side surfaces of your teeth, the area beneath the gums and other areas that are not clearly visible. X-Rays a usually taken according to a schedule and not at every visit.

Been Awhile?

Even if you think you’re doing a stellar job in caring for your teeth, you still need regular professional cleanings performed by a licensed hygienist. Give Smilemakers a call and we’ll get you in for a cleaning as soon as possible.
